Rare photos of Prisoner of War (POW) camps will be on display as well as five postcards sent by Ballarat resident, David Manning, who was a POW on the Thai-Burma Railway and today lives in Ballarat. David was a POW for three and a half years and during that time was only able to send five postcards to his family. Volunteers from The Military History Group in Melbourne will be coming with uniformed troops from WW1 and US Marines from WW2 in memory of the battle weary men from the 1st Marine Division, United States Marine Corps, who were sent to Ballarat for recuperation in 1934. Fifteen vintage and classic cars of the era from the Ballarat Vintage Classic Club, will be on display, and visitors will be able to listen to talks on the history of Ballarat during WW1 from 1914 until April 1915 when Gallipoli occurred. Another highlight will be WW1 honour boards that were created as memorials to those who served. One board, given to the Sovereign Hill Museums Association thirty years ago, is being shown for the first time since being removed from Pleasant Street Primary School’s previous building in the 1980s. This special event focusing on Ballarat in times of war follows on from an exhibition earlier this year on the US Marines in Victoria: Overpaid, Over Sexed and Over Here. It is here where the wives of the pilots come to spend some brief, precious time with their husbands. It’s here where lips are worn stiff and tension is relieved by banter and alcohol that Rattigan’s exhilarating story of loyalty, love and moral choices unfolds. We observe three married couples. The apparently gung-ho Flight-Lieutenant Graham and his actress wife; Polish officer Count Skriczevinsky and Doris a former bar-maid, and rear-gunner Miller a cheerful Cockney ex-bus driver and his perplexed wife Maudie. But there’s also an unexpected extra guest: Peter Kyle an incongruous visitor to this workaday establishment, given his glamorous Hollywood connections. As the Wellington bombers roar off along the flare path that lights their way into the engulfing black void beyond no one can be sure which, if any, of the pilots will be coming back. Tickets: Adult: $25.00, Concession: $20.00, Member: $16.00, Group 10+: $18.00, Student: $18.00, | U3A Member: $18.00 Sunday Matinee Only, Probus: $18.00 Wednesday evening.
