Wesley LifeForce Suicide Prevention Workshop

Monday 28 April Suicide devastates many rural communities each year but the community in Ararat is working towards prevention. After a successful community meeting on suicide prevention on 5 December 2013, Wesley LifeForce began a community suicide prevention network in Ararat. The network has been encouraging community members to develop local strategies to address the issue. To build upon the community’s resilience and expertise, Wesley LifeForce will be hosting a workshop to teach the skills of suicide prevention in Ararat. Every day in Australia, an average of six people die from suicide. It is the largest cause of death for men under 44 and women under 34. Workshop participants will learn about the issues surrounding suicide and be equipped with the skills to identify and support people at risk. They will also learn how to access professional assistance and support. Wesley Mission’s LifeForce program has trained more than 20,000 Australians in suicide prevention.Cost: Free. Alzheimer's Australia Vic in partnership with RACV will be hosting FREE community information sessions on dementia and driving for family and friends of a person diagnosed with dementia in nine locations across Victoria between March 2014 and March 2015. This interactive information session is specifically designed to help family members, carers and friends support a person living with dementia to balance independence and safety and stay active, mobile and socially connected in the transition to non-driving. Wednesday 28 May Penny Byrne is a visual artist who uses vintage porcelain figurines and other found objects to create artworks that wield a powerful political message. These manipulated, mutilated and painted figurines explore issues concerning the environment, pop culture and global politics. Byrne’s reputation as a respected ceramics conservator informs her practice, rendering her works as meticulous and studied subversions of her craft.
