Wednesday 3 December The story is about the courage in the 1950's of my young parents from Dublin, myself and five others travelling with our mother alone on a ship for six weeks. My mother joined her husband and came to a mining village in the Latrobe Valley, reared a family of thirteen, and gave all of us a chance to do well by instilling a love of music. writing and giving us a belief that all was possible if we just believed and worked hard. My father was an Irish tenor, his name was Paddy O'Dowd. It was his great warmth and generosity that brought the community, all emigrants together, starting dances, concerts, street parades. They came to a place where there was nothing and brought a sense of culture, and hope in a new life. We became The O'Dowd Family Showband, playing all over Australia.
