Australian Romantic Realist: Michael Shannon

When: 10 December 2011 09:00 AM - 12 February 2012 05:00 PM
@ Art Gallery of Ballarat 40 Lydiard St Nth, Ballarat

Saturday 10 December to Sunday 12 February
Michael Shannon is one of Australia's most under-regarded major artists from the 1950s to the 1980s. In his heyday, Shannon's distinctive paintings were as avidly collected and frequently displayed as those of his near contemporaries John Brack and Fred Williams. However since his death from Parkinson's disease at the age of 65 in 1993 his work has suffered an eclipse and he has been largely overlooked by critics and the broader public.
Nearly twenty years after his passing, the Art Gallery of Ballarat presents a retrospective of the work of this major artist, giving visitors the opportunity to see works that merit comparison with those of his better known contemporaries.
Shannon was one of the first artists in the post war period to explore the urban landscape, being one of the first to depict the suburban sprawl. His later work, lyrical landscapes of Central Victoria, seem to ignore all the aesthetic debates of the 1970s and 1980s and return to a celebration of the rural hinterlands such as was first undertaken by Australian Impressionists of the late 19th century.
In the early 1950s, the Art Gallery of Ballarat played a special role in the rise of the career of Michael Shannon, twice awarding him the George Crouch Prize, which was at that time the one of the richest contemporary art awards in the nation. Now it takes on the challenge of bringing this important artist back into the public gaze.

@ Art Gallery of Ballarat 40 Lydiard St Nth, Ballarat

Celebrate the Queen's Diamond Jubilee the gallery will feature an exhibition of vintage prints taken by royal photographer, Sir Cecil Beaton.
This special exhibition of nearly 100 portraits taken by Beaton over a period of 30 years depicts Elizabeth in her roles as princess, monarch and mother, and will include a number of rarely-seen photographs alongside extracts from Beaton's personal diaries and letters.
Beaton's royal portraits were among the most widely published photos of the 20th century. The exhibition explores Beaton's long relationship with Elizabeth, who was a teenage princess when he first photographed her in 1942 to tender images of the Queen with her young children and official portraits that convey the magnitude of her role as Britain's monarch and centrepiece of the Commonwealth.
It will show elegant and highly-staged photographs alongside informal moments of the royal family at home, interspersed with film and radio footage from the time and charts the shift in Beaton's style from early rococo-inspired portraits to the starker images of the 1960s.
Extracts from Beaton's diaries and letters will reveal insights into the working practice of a royal sitting, from the intense planning beforehand to conversations with the Queen and the pressures of achieving the perfect portrait.
Exhibition organised by the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.
Admission: Adult: $12.00, Concession: $8.00, Child and Gallery Members: Free.

Through the Notebook - Marie Antoinette: Marion Manifold

When: 24 March 2012 09:00 AM - 29 April 2012 05:00 PM
@ Art Gallery of Ballarat 40 Lydiard St Nth, Ballarat

Saturday 24 March to Sunday 29 April 2012
The exhibition started as research into Marie Antoinette's 'Notebook of Ladies' Attire' in the Archives Nationales, Paris. The book has fabric samples which were presented to Marie Antoinette who pricked the pages with a pin to choose her attire.
Using a facsimile of the book and researching places and images of Marie Antoinette's life and era, including the revolution, Victorian artist Marion Manifold has created works that are richly beaded and/or embroidered, or painted, some with silk appliqué, in keeping with Marie Antoinette's lifestyle.
Marie Antoinette's fashion revolution was the beginning of her end on the guillotine. Her fate is omnipresent in the work - the attempted destruction of her identity through satire and as Prisoner No. 280 and the complete loss of identity by beheading and burial in an unmarked grave.
This project has been assisted by the Australian Government through the Australia Council for the Arts, its arts funding and advisory body and is a result of a 3 month Paris residency.
Admission: Free.

Capturing Flora: 300 years of Australian botanical art

When: 29 September 2012 09:00 AM - 02 December 2012 05:00 PM
@ Art Gallery of Ballrat, 40 Lydiard St Nth, Ballarat

Saturday 29 September to Sunday 2 December
This remarkable exhibition celebrates our continent's amazing and diverse flora and the ways Australian plants have been recorded, interpreted and popularised by botanical artists from William Dampier and the early explorers to the present day.
The European discovery of this continent took place during the Enlightenment, an era when time, effort and finances were put into voyages of exploration. The botanical art which recorded newly-discovered plants which were radically strange to European eyes was of extraordinarily high quality.
During the 19th century, the growing middle class, both in the colonies and the home country developed an insatiable interest in horticultural pursuits while scientific institutions were building up their knowledge of botanical resources. New printing techniques allowed prints to be coloured mechanically, resulting in a boom in botanical art which lasted into the 20th century.
Since the 1950s there has been a renaissance of botanical art under such luminaries as Margaret Stones and Celia Rosser. Australia now has one of the most vibrant practicing botanical art traditions in the world and the exhibition includes some of the finest examples of the work of Australia's contemporary botanical artists.
Capturing Flora aims to be the most comprehensive exhibition of Australia botanical art ever held in this country. It brings together over 300 images, the vast majority of which have been collected by the Art Gallery of Ballarat in recent years. It will be accompanied by a major publication, the first comprehensive monograph to cover this 'territory' for over 10 years.
Admission: Adult: $12.00, Concession: $8.00, Child and Gallery Members: Free.
For further information contact 03 5320 5858.
