Sunday 26 February
How had a twenty–two–year–old pretentious layabout made a discovery that would elude every other cinematic pioneer for years to come?
In a remote village in Eastern Europe, around 1900, the young Motl Mendl is entranced by the flickering silent images on his father’s cinematograph. Bankrolled by Jacob, the ebullient local timber merchant, and inspired by Anna, the girl sent to help him make moving pictures of their village, he stumbles on a revolutionary way of story-telling. Forty years on, Motl – now a famed American film director – looks back on his early life and confronts the cost of fulfilling his dreams.
Following Vincent in Brixton and The Reporter, Nicholas Wright’s new play is a funny and fascinating tribute to the Eastern European immigrants who became major players in Hollywood’s golden age. The award-winning Antony Sher – whose previous work with the National Theatre includes Primo and Stanley – returns to play Jacob.

Melbourne Symphony Orchestra
When: 28 March 2012 08:00 PM -@ Her Majesty Theatre, 17 Lydiard St Sth, Ballarat
Wednesday 28 March
The Adagio of Mozart's Clarinet Concerto, recently voted one of Australia's favourite pieces of classical music, is part of one of the most enduring Mozart masterworks. Coming from near the end of Mozart's short, eventful life, how can we not find this concerto both poignant and inspiring?
During his years in New York, Antonin Dvořák created the first major concert work still performed widely today which evokes the American west. Just before its premiere in 1893 Dvořák said that parts of his new symphony were inspired by Longfellow’s The Song of Hiawatha. Yet we can hear his homesickness for his native Bohemia in the haunting and unforgettable slow movement of this ever-popular 'New World' symphony.
Featuring one of Australia's greatest clarinettists, the MSO's own Philip Arkinstall, this compelling program opens with Beethoven's powerful overture to the tragedy Egmont, and is conducted by young Australian maestro Matthew Wood. Now living in the UK, he has already conducted such major orchestras as the Bournemouth Symphony, the Philharmonia and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra.
Tickets: Adult: $44.00, Concession: $42.00, Member: $36.00, Group 10+: $32.00, Student/Youth: $32.00, Child: $32.00.

Making their World Premiere season in Australia, Les Ballets Eloelle are bringing their new production Men In Pink Tights - the most spectacular, talented and hilarious all-male comedy ballet ever.

The New York-based company is led by creative Director and lead dancer Victor Trevino, who was artistic Director and Lead Dancer in 2007 with the hugely successful Australian and New Zealand tour of “Men in Tutu’s”.
Les Ballet’s Elolle Men In Pink Tights personifies the elemental parody of both classic and present-day ballet. The combining of magnificent dance proficiency, bantering and clamorous wittiness with designed mannerisms, dance misadventures and naturally outrageous hissy fits by gentlemen role playing both masculine and feminine personas (just about all of the gentlemen act, and in reality appear like beautiful ladies, although others are furry chested adult males with flapcake make-up but all stylish in tights and tutus and dancing on perfect Pointe.
“Men in Pink Tights” produces bang-up amusement and LOL “Lough Out Loud” family entertainment for all. Be truly amazed.

She Stoops to Conquer
When: 14 April 2012 01:00 PM -@ Her Majesty Theatre, 17 Lydiard St Sth, Ballarat
Saturday 14 April
To come to my house, to call for what he likes, to turn me out of my own chair, to insult the family, to order his servants to get drunk, and then to tell me, 'This house is mine, sir'. By all that’s impudent it makes me laugh.
Hardcastle, a man of substance, looks forward to acquainting his daughter with his old pal’s son with a view to marriage. But thanks to playboy Lumpkin, he’s mistaken by his prospective son-in-law Marlow for an innkeeper, his daughter for the local barmaid. The good news is, while Marlow can barely speak to a woman of quality he’s a charmer with those of a different stamp. And so, as Hardcastle’s indignation intensifies, Miss Hardcastle’s appreciation for her misguided suitor soars. Misdemeanours multiply, love blossoms, mayhem ensues.
This little barmaid though runs in my head most strangely, and drives out the absurdities of all the rest of the family. She’s mine, she must be mine, or I’m greatly mistaken.
One of the great, generous-hearted and ingenious comedies of the English language, Goldsmith’s She Stoops to Conquer offers a celebration of chaos, courtship and the dysfunctional family.

The Housekeeper
When: 02 June 2012 08:00 PM -@ Her Majesty's Theatre, 17 Lydiard St Sth, Ballarat
Saturday 2 June
All is revealed when two of Australia’s best comic talents combine for this offbeat comedy between a middle-aged, rather stuffy bachelor and the eccentric bag lady he hires as a housekeeper.
Manley Carstairs has lived at home with his domineering mother until her recent death. Newly alone, he has hired a housekeeper, Annie Dankworth, to clean and cook for him. When Annie first arrives with her belongings in a shopping trolley, Manley is taken aback, but she seems so eager to please that he relents – after which their relationship progresses rapidly from initial reserve to outright hostility.

Carmen
When: 30 June 2012 07:30 PM -@ Her Majesty's Theatre, 17 Lydiard St Sth, Ballarat
Saturday 30 June
The smouldering gypsy seductress, Carmen, leaves men panting for more. Foresworn to “freedom,” she can be embraced, but never possessed. Her fate lies inextricably in the cards. See how a casual, flirtatious dalliance when mixed with jealousy and obsession becomes a seriously deadly game of chance. An unforgettable tragedy of shocking and risqué morality, set to a fiery, colourful score infused with the pulsing sensuality of gypsy and Spanish influenced melodies.
Carmen is Bizet's best-known opera, and one of the most popular operas of all time. It was first performed in 1875 and has been a central part of the operatic repertoire ever since. Part of its appeal is its highly dramatic story, initially denounced by critics as immoral, and its vivid range of characters from Carmen, the passionate gypsy, to Escamillo the heroic bullfighter, and Bizet's evocative music.
Over 90 Victorian performers have been assembled by Melbourne Opera to bring Bizet’s dramatic story to life, creating an opera bursting with energy and packed full of great tunes including the Toreador Song, Habanera, Seguidilla and Flower song.
Tickets: Adult: $50.00, Concession: $45.00, Member: $40.00, Group 10+: $45.00, Student/Youth: $25.00, Child: $25.00.

What A Man's Gotta Do
When: 07 September 2012 08:00 PM -@ The Call Room, Ballarat Mining Exchange, 10 Lydiard St Nth, Ballarat
Friday 7 September
Andrew Horabin is a state and national award-winning singer/songwriter with a one man comedy musical that asks, what’s a man gotta do to be a man in your town?
In his hilarious show, Andrew uses comedy, song and storytelling to explore some of the issues of masculinity - sex, work, marriage, mateship, intimacy, fathering, feelings, booze, homophobia and attachments to motor vehicles.
Our story begins when Adam's Buck's Party collides with Lucy's Hens in the street. Lucy declares that he'll never grow up. Adam protests. She gives him 24 hours to prove he's a man - or the wedding's off!
Muzza and Gazza are not much help. They tell him she's just a sheila and sheilas change their minds. But she's not changing it back. And the hour of the wedding is fast approaching, leaving Adam asking "What's a man gotta do to be a man?"
With no formal initiation or rites of passage, these three young blokes must forge their own path into manhood.
The audience helps, with their own ideas of how to become a man, but will it be enough? How lost will they get on the journey? What risks do they take in trying to initiate themselves? And will they make it back in time?
Adult themes and course language (Definitely not suitable for people under the age of 16. Contains explicit language and adult concepts.)
