YOUNG FILM MAKERS PUT VOLUNTEERING IN THE FRAME
When: 19 April 2012 - 22 July 2012Minister for Social Inclusion, Mark Butler, today invited budding young film makers to take part in the Volunteering Video Competition for Young People, an initiative aimed at highlighting the benefits of volunteering and telling the story about the enjoyment, fun and social interaction that Australians get from volunteering in their communities.
Mr Butler was joined by Moreton MP Graham Perrett at a National Youth Week Youth Roundtable in Sunnybank to officially open the competition.
The competition is open to entrants aged 15 to under 25 years and asks them to create a 30 to 60 second video using the theme, „Your passion, Our nation. Volunteer now!‟
“Volunteers contribute enormously across a range of sectors, such as community, education, religion and sport. We want more of our young Australians to know about the benefits to them and their community of volunteering, and show them the variety of ways they can contribute to a cause of their choice,” Mr Butler said.
Mr Perrett said young people from across Moreton came together to meet the Minister and discuss issues close to their heart at the Sunnybank National Youth Week Youth Roundtable.
“National Youth Week is about recognising the value of all young Australians and giving them the chance to express their ideas and opinions,” Mr Perrett said.
“That‟s why we have come together today and that‟s why competitions such as the „Volunteering Video Competition for Young People‟ are so important.”
Mr Geoffrey Rush, Australian of the Year 2012, also announced his endorsement for the competition today.
“Like the arts, volunteering can sometimes lack visibility and people aren‟t aware of the enormous opportunities it provides. I‟d like to encourage our young film makers to get behind the camera and capture the true essence of volunteering and the benefits that young people can gain from it,” Mr Rush said.
“There are great prizes on offer to help support a young film maker‟s skills and most importantly participation in the competition will help spread the message to ensure volunteering grows into the future.”
The competition opens today, Thursday 19 April 2012, and closes on Sunday 22 July 2012. Full details about the competition, including how to enter, age categories, and terms and conditions, can be found at http://volunteering.notforprofit.gov.au. Entries will be featured on the competition website.

Linear - Paintings and Drawings: Janette Lucas
When: 27 April 2012 10:00 AM - 28 May 2012 05:00 PM@ Off the Beaten Track Wine and Art Gallery, 6669 Western Highway, Buangor
Friday 27 April to Monday 28 May
There is a mixture of work in this exhibition, but the thread, or should we say string, is evident. There are the ever present signature chairs (Sundeck & Chair on Red), interiors (Floating Room) and glimpses through windows into other worlds (Obelisks) and of course - Nets. In all work, but especially the Nets, the dominant element is line; thus the title of the exhibition - Linear.
“I find fishing nets appealing to draw and paint. They allow me to continue using line as one of the most dominant elements in my work.
“Realists use line to represent objects, often as an outline. Fishing nets allow me to represent an object without using an outline; instead the line is an integral part of the object. The lines are built up in layers.
“I have used line to describe these objects, because they are linear in nature, made up of a mesh, hanging together, but they are still one object. This means I can play with lines to represent the form and texture, without focusing on the outline. In a way they are created on the canvas or paper, by me, in the same way they are created in the factory, one knot or loop at a time.”
Janette has used graphite like paint, draws on raw linen, transforming the graphite into her acrylic lines, as in ‘Graphite to Pigment Over Green.’ The starting point in these works is rope and nets, but Lucas takes the subject beyond subject matter, abstracting the forms into the paint and canvas.
Admission: Free.

Bebop jazz; the flash and rhythm of city streets; long, cool horizons; the scintillating shimmer of light found deep in the Australian bush: the artist Andrew has created images that resonate across time and place.

Catherine Johnston's sculptures comment on the contemporary human condition using repetition, scale and respect for the technical process. In this selection of installation, sculptures, and photographs she delves within the fragile shell innocuous exterior forms to comment on the hidden personal experiences beneath.
These highly polished recent works shine with the artist's sardonic insight and confronting humour, exploring themes of fertility, mental health, social disconnection, and objectification.

Set in the early part of the 20th century when Oklahoma was still Indian Territory, the fierce rivalry between the local farmers and cowboys provides the colorful background against which Curly, a handsome cowboy, and Laurey, a winsome farm girl, fall in love. The road to true love never runs smooth, and with these two headstrong romantics holding the reins, the journey is a bumpy ride!
Featuring much loved classics “Oh, What A Beautiful Mornin’,” “The Surrey With The Fringe On Top,” “People Will Say We’re In Love,” and the iconic title song “Oklahoma!”, this is a show not to be missed.

Other: Tracey Moffatt
When: 17 May 2012 05:00 PM - 01 July 2012 09:00 AM@ Project Window, Art Gallery of Ballarat, 40 Lydiard St Nth, Ballarat
Thursday 17 May to Sunday 1 July
Other is the last in a series of works by video artist Tracey Moffatt using film collage, in which she creates a narrative by selecting clips from film that elicit poignant and insightful understandings of stereotypes and cultural attitudes. For Other, a collaboration with Gary Hillberg, she has cut scenes from sources as diverse as King Kong and Sex and the City.
As the title suggests, Other explores the idea that our perception of other people as different - the Other - is part of how we define ourselves. Moffatt extends that concept to visually explore the ways in which societies define minorities as the Other.
By tracing a thread through the history of cinema and Hollywood's representation of relationships and sexuality, Moffatt documents how we have seen and thought about questions of race, morality and sexual identity.
While Moffatt has brought the "history" together, there is an ambiguity or open-endedness as to what she is saying - the work presents the stereotypes but leaves you to draw your own conclusions.

When: 19 May 2012 09:00 AM - 01 July 2012 05:00 PM@ Art Gallery of Ballarat, 40 Lydiard St Nth, Ballarat
Saturday 19 May to Sunday 1 July
Gareth Sansom's work is like a theatre of the absurd, with a motley cast of manic and macabre characters drawn from the world of the artist's fertile imagination as well as from religion and history, pop culture, street art, underground comics and cinema.
His work, often exploring issues of mortality, sexual identity and popular culture, is noted for raucous colour chords, disjunctions of scale, passages of discordant and lubricious enamel paint, textual commentary and mordant humour.
The latest exhibition examines one of the long-running themes in Sansom's work, the transvestite, having as its centrepiece Samson Agonistes , a major 2007 work which the artist donated to the Art Gallery of Ballarat.
Gareth Sansom has been a major contributor to the art scene since the mid-1960s, with almost 50 individual exhibitions and participation in over 170 group exhibitions to his credit. The work that he has produced in the last decade is more confident and ambitious, more energised and brazen in colour and richer in its iconography than ever before.
WARNING: Works in this exhibition may offend some visitors.

Thursday 24 to Friday 25 May
n April 2009, two weeks short of his nineteenth birthday Toowoomba teenager Kristjan Terauds died due to complications from illicit drug use.
Inspired by ‘April’s Fool’, an account of his son’s death by Kristjan’s father, the Empire Theatre commissioned award-winning playwright, David Burton to bring this story to the stage.
Using the words of Kristjan’s friends and family interviewed over many months the result is a powerful mix of sadness, loss, and ultimately love, laced with humour.
April's Fool promises to be a thought-provoking and ultimately optimistic reflection on how we all live our lives.
Young people, parents, teachers, youth workers and theatre critics universally praised April's Fool for its ability to engage them in this story, gently sharing with its audience and at no time to seeking to lecture or preach.
The result is a theatre experience that reflects Kristjan himself – loving, warm, generous, open, honourable, gentle, complex and provocative.
