BREAKING NEWS: The Bakery Hill TAB is now a crime scene after an attempted armed robbery earlier today, closed to the public while forensic officers gather evidence and piece together the actions of the bandit.
At around 11:30am a 42-year-old Newlyn man entered the TAB wielding a 30cm knife demanding cash from behind the counter of the TAB.
The offender was overcome by customers and staff at the TAB in what police have called a citizens arrest.
The struggle was not without injury, three people incurred minor cuts and bruises after a short but ‘violent fight’ all three were treated on scene by Ambulance.
The 42-year-old offender has been taken to Ballarat Base Hospital with head and upper body injuries.
Damage has been caused to some of the facilities within the TAB with TV screens ripped from the wall and a mess created during the incident.
Ballarat Police Acting Sergeant Brett Robinson said the man was not believed to be a regular in the area and was not previously known to police.
The man is expected to be charged with armed robbery and a number of assault related offences.
