Media Release from the City of Ballarat:
The Arch of Victory, one of the most important icons in Ballarat’s historic landscape, will be officially re-opened by the Governor-General of Australia Quentin Bryce on Sunday (06/11).
The official re-opening event will commence with a march at 11.40am followed by official proceedings at 12 noon.
Ballarat Mayor Cr Craig Fletcher said he hoped to see many members of the local community come along to this momentous occasion.
“The historical significance of the Arch of Victory cannot be underestimated, with both state and national heritage listings and significant cultural and heritage values to Ballarat.
“Sunday will be a great day for the Ballarat community to celebrate. With the 100th anniversary of World War One approaching, it is fantastic to see the Arch of Victory restoration project complete and the Arch looking its finest.”
The six month restoration project was completed in August and included the restoration of all cracked and drummy renders, roofing and plaques. New low energy lighting was also installed as part of the historic works.
The restoration project was the result of 12 months of planning between Council and the Arch of Victory / Avenue of Honour Committee of Management.
The works were jointly funded by Council ($300,000), and the Federal Government which provided $335,000 through its Regional and Local Community Infrastructure Program and $175,000 through the National Heritage Sites Program.
